Citronella
Collar Stops the Barking Fast!
Training your dog through the use of a citronella collar, is a safe, effective and humane method of
controlling troublesome behaviour such as excessive dog barking and other unwanted behaviour typical in
puppies and older untrained dogs.
Citronella dog collars are very effective because they work on four sensory levels of sound, touch, sight, and
smell. When the spray is triggered the animal first hears it, which startles him, he can also feel the spray on his
snout and see the mist in the air. Worst of all, the citronella spay is very unpleasant to his sense of smell.
Usually on the first instance of spraying the dog will stop dead in his tracks and stop whatever he was doing to
work out what is going on. If he was barking at another dog for example he can become so distracted that he forgets
all about the other dog and reason for his barking.
After repeated spraying from the collar, the dog soon begins to establish a relationship between being sprayed
and his unwanted behaviour. He therefore quickly learns to modify his behaviour to avoid the unpleasant
experience.
So What Type Of Citronella Collar is
Best?
There are many different citronella collars on the market from suppliers such as PetSafe, Innotek, Multivet,
Premier and more. They all offer many different product solutions with varying features.
Choosing the right citronella collar from all the different options available may seem like a difficult task,
however it becomes a lot easier when you narrow the list down to your specific needs.
There are basically two different types of citronella dog collars on offer. An
anti-bark Citronella Collar, or a remote control citronella collar. So the first step is to decide which
one of these is right for you?
Anti-Bark Citronella Collar
The anti-bark citronella collar is designed specifically to stop dog barking. It has a small microphone
embedded in it which automatically triggers a spay of citronella in the direction of the dogs snout whenever the
dog barks.
As this collar works automatically, there is no need to monitor the dog for it to work, which makes this a great
solution for those who want to control dog barking with a minimum of fuss. The only thing required to maintain
operation is that the citronella reservoir attached to the collar is kept topped up and the batteries replaced when
they get flat.
Check out the following PetSafe video to see how easy it is to stop dog barking with an anti-bark citronella
collar.
Remote Control Citronella Collar
The second type of citronella collar uses a remote control which allows the dog owner to trigger the spray at
will. This makes it very useful for more advanced dog training not just to prevent dog barking.
But you will need to keep your dog under observation and manually trigger the spray whenever the dog behaves
inappropriately for this to be effective. You are not going to be able to control your dog's barking while you are
away from home for example, so if this is important to you, then you will need to consider an anti-bark citronella
collar instead.
The remote control citronella collar is great for all round dog training where you want to stop your dog from
things like peeing on the carpet or floor and other unwanted areas, chewing on furniture and shoes etc, jumping up
on people, scavenging in rubbish bins, digging holes and many other undesirable traits.
Some of these collars can also cue the dog with a pleasant sound when he does something right. This further
strengthens the desired behaviour or response making the dog learn faster. The working range of these collars is
typically somewhere between 100 to 300 feet.
The citronella spray in these collars is harmless to humans, animals and the environment. They are completely
safe to use with all dogs including puppies, cause no fear, pain, or side effects and are recommended by leading
animal experts.

How To Train Your Dog To Speak and
Sing
Dogs that constantly bark are a real nuisance but what can you do about it to stop them? One way is to teach
your dog to bark on your command. That may seem counter intuitive, but once your dog is trained to bark on command
it is far easier to prevent him from barking when you don't want him to.
You can also teach a dog to "speak" and "sing". This will work with any dog but you need the patience to train
them. Believe it or not your dog can be taught to speak no matter what type of breed or size. One way to do this is
to call your dog over and show him a treat, this could be just a small biscuit. This might confuse your dog
initially, as he wouldn't know what to do to get the treat. But finally, he will sit down, get impatient, and then
utter a sharp bark which is what you have been waiting for. The instant when he does so, reward him with a
treat.
Not all dogs love to bark. Just like humans, some are aggressive and some are plainly shy. For these types of
dogs, they can be encouraged to do so by imitating a bark. Chances are, he will reply to it. Reward him with a
treat so that he learns to bark as soon as he hears the word "speak". Now, after he has been taught to bark once,
you can teach him a series of barks. Each time he sees a specific signal he will will be expecting a reward, this
can lead to a full phase of commands which will encourage him to bark on demand even more.
Other than being social beings, dogs are very observant. By the time you signal your pet to stop at the
slightest command, your friends won't detect the magic trick. You can use subtle movements of hands and feet; a
wink, or a shift of your gaze, and if you keep up with these tricks, you might be firing up an interesting series
of barks that can sound as if your pet is having a conversation. Your friends will be amazed when they see this
trick, they will never know how you have done this.
If you are showing your dog to family and friends and you want him to "speak" you could really show off by
asking your dog a question. That way, you can amaze and impress people with your "talking dog". Either way, that is
much better than pestering barks in the neighborhood.
Now that your dog can now "speak", you can now teach him how to "sing". You could teach him to sing by using a
series of howls or whines which can easily be mistaken as a song. Once your dog has learnt to follow these signals
he will sing automatically whenever these signals are given. It takes lots of practice but eventually you will be
able to get your dog to sing following your signals.
Do not forget to praise and treat him and give plentiy of encouragement. Practicing these signals on a daily
basis will really help both you and your dog.
By training your dog in this way not only do you curb his annoying behaviour, you have conditioned your pet to
make him understand that barking and whining is only allowed on command.
For people with busy lifestyles, or dogs that bark when their owners are out, one of the easiest ways
to train your dog not to bark is through the use of a citronella dog collar. Your dog will associate the
unpleasant experience of getting sprayed everytime he barks so will learn not to bark very quickly.
